How big are the dreams you nurture?

Nurture Yourself When You Visualize Greatness

What does visualizing greatness mean to you?  And how does it relate to nurturing yourself?

My book, Nurture Yourself First: Gentle Steps in Personal and Planetary Transformation should launch in just about two months.  Meanwhile, I’d like to share some practical thoughts on how you can begin now to take better care of yourself, so you can contribute fully to our ongoing global transformation.

How Long Since You Focused on Heartfelt Dreams?

If you are dealing with many challenges daily, how long since you have reflected on what you dream of doing to make a difference in your world?

How Long Since You Dared to Imagine Your Greatness?

If you are struggling with all the hassles of modern life, not to mention some stressful major issues, how long since you lifted your eyes to visualize something far better for yourself?

How long since you dared to visualize greatness?

Too Long?

If your answer to either of the questions above is more than a week ago, it has been too long!  Now is the time for you to get in touch with your heart’s desires.   Here is the deal.

Chances for winning the lottery are slim and besides, research shows that people who win typically are no happier a year later than when they bought the winning ticket.  You build greatness, like happiness, from the inside out.

Motivate Self-Nurturing and Fulfill Your Heartfelt Dream

Having a dream and remembering your greatness is a wonderful way to motivate better self care.  If you have a dream to fulfill, you are worth cherishing and nurturing.

Here is a well-kept secret.  Each one of us has at least one dream to fulfill.

What Dreams Would Allow Your Greatness to Shine?

As part of nurturing yourself, take a moment to get in touch with your dreams.  Imagine or attune to your expanded consciousness, your magnificent inner self.  What are the gifts you contribute to your immediate world?  Are you a fabulous parent? Are you a peaceful haven for friends in need?  Are you a humanitarian?  An organizer of things or people?  Are you a builder or maintainer?  A leader?  A team player?  A consensus-builder?  An artist or performer?

Imagine that you are expressing your gifts and talents in fulfillment of your heartfelt dream.  What does this look like?  What are you doing and saying?  What are others around you doing and saying?  How do you feel?  Savor this experience.  Take in the colors and activities.  Drink in the words of acknowledgment.

Now make notes about this inner experience so you can refer to it in the future.  This can begin your template for creating greatness as part of nurturing yourself.  (Soon, you can check out Nurture Yourself First for a Change for details about creating and working with templates for creating your heart’s desires.)

Greatness of Your Heart’s Desires

In order to nurture the greatness of your heart’s desires, you need to do three interrelated things that are simple but not necessarily easy.

  1. Identify your heart’s desires
  2. Know yourself.
  3. Love yourself.

A fourth step, taking action to fulfill your heart’s desires, is relatively easy, once you are taking the first three steps.

1. Identify Your Heart’s Desires

You made a beginning on this step if you let yourself imagine greatness as I suggested above. If you have not yet plunged in, you might start by asking yourself a few questions:

Who do I really want to be?

How do I want to express myself in this world?

What would I love to contribute to my world?

What gifts and talents do I long to share?

What do I want to be, do and have?

One or more of these questions may open the gates of knowing for you.  Write down your thoughts.  You might start with a long list of wants.  See if you can combine and pare them down to about a dozen deep desires.  You may find that your short list of heart’s desires reflects the many facets of your life, from career to parenting, finances, creativity, spirituality, and more.  You may have opportunities to shine with greatness in one or more of these areas!

2. Know Yourself

You need to have an idea of who you are and what you are about, from the inside out.  Funnily enough, we all do know who we are.  Does this make sense to you?  Somewhere in your heart, you know that you are more than this package of skin and bones.  You are more than the buzzing neurons in your brain.  You are more than your knee-jerk emotional reactions.

Be With Yourself

This kind of self-knowledge involves more than the mind.  On a practical level, it involves just being with yourself, so that you can see and accept all facets of yourself.  And even more, so you can enjoy the core essence of yourself.  You could call this core your soul, your authentic self, your divine spark, your connection with Spirit, or anything else that makes sense to you.

Over the course of many years, I have come to know myself mainly through daily meditation and spiritual exercises.  If you do not already turn within to know yourself, I recommend that you explore.  There are many good books and videos available, or you can check out some of my articles on How to Meditate.

Start with a few minutes daily and increase gradually.  Although you might think you do not have time to meditate, if you practice regularly, you will come to relish and protect these interludes of peace.  You will gain and treasure increasing inner awareness and strengthen your connection with your heart-centered wisdom.

3. Love Yourself

Many people secretly feel they are unlovable or unworthy.  Some seek love and approval or validation from people nearby.  Some try to be important or in control to make up for feeling unloved.  Some seem determined to prove that they are not very lovable.  If any of these scenarios trigger even a glimmer of recognition in you, you need to learn to love yourself ruthlessly.

I wrote Nurture Yourself First for a Change to give people, especially women, permission to take care of themselves as much as they take care of others. Small, persistent steps in self-nurturing are powerful antidotes to feelings of being unworthy or unlovable.

When you take regular, practical steps in self-care, you naturally discover that you are loving yourself more.  You have more self-compassion.  You can bounce back more easily from stress.  I keep a small list of daily self-nurturing strategies which help me to stay centered in loving for others and for myself.

Loving in Action

So, love and nurture yourself.  The way you know you are loving yourself is when you see yourself demonstrating your loving in action.  Maybe you buy a small bouquet for yourself, or you stop eating sugary foods.  Maybe you tell yourself kind words each day, or forgive yourself for any errors and self-judgments.  Maybe you spend time reflecting and writing in your journal to capture the aha moments on your journey of loving and learning.  Maybe you love yourself by meditating for five or ten minutes a day.

Nurture Your Upward Spiral into Greatness

One step at a time into your greatness . . .

One step at a time into your greatness . . .

What if you begin an upward spiraling journey that helps you know yourself better, then love yourself more, then understand yourself more fully, then nurture and encourage yourself more?  What if each turning on the spiral brings new adventures in self-learning and inner growth?

You might find that your heart’s desires start coming true easily and naturally.  You might enjoy taking small steps consistently to bring your dreams into reality.

You might find that your greatness emerges as an simple outcome of your persistent steps forward.
